Do you get 10,000?

Do you know how many steps per day you should reach per day to be healthy? I have read that 10,000 steps will give you a good active lifestyle and fight against weight gain.

Now if you do research and find that this number is different, don't get mad at me. I read this in The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. But when I did a little internet exploring I did see this number as well. But I found that different age groups or body types might need more.

My family and I have been taking our dogs for a 2 mile walk each night. I thought this was really great. But then I found out how many steps make up a mile. Walking a mile is approximately 2,000 steps. So therefore each night I walk about 4,000 steps.

I never really realized how little I have been moving lately. I walk around the house a little bit, but I will hazard a guess that I get about 5,000 or maybe 6,000 a day with my walk and being around the house.

I'll be honest, I usually dread walking. But I really should look forward to it. But I am the type of person that likes quantification. I like numbers and statistics. I like gold stars for people telling me I'm doing a good job.

I have the Nike + dohicky thing where the piece goes in my Nike+ running shoes and I have it linked to my iPod and kalazam! My iPod picks up the pace I'm walking or running, how long I walk, the calories I burn. I was so happy when I found this because I could finally get my quantification. I could finally get gold stars!


There are other brands and types of things that do the same thing as my Nike+ shoe thing. But really the important thing is just to get out there. Even though I dread the walk, I enjoy it once I am outside. I love how it clears my head and allows me to think while breathing in fresh air.

I realize this post doesn't exactly have a point, but I want anybody who reads it to be aware that it is easy as a 30 minute walk to start getting healthy. And really, who couldn't use a 30 minute walk whether it be for exercise, to clear your head or just to get from one place to another... walking is good for us.

  2. Posts done need to have points :) sometimes they just get to exist and that's enough. I don't know how many steps I take a day, but I sure hope that my gym routine is enough to keep me healthy!
