2013 Air Force Ball Show & Tell

I want to start out by saying how I had an amazing time at the ball. If you have been to a military ball before, you probably know the general gist of the evening, but here's my official rundown of the night...

6 pm Cocktail / Social Hour
6:40 pm (about) door open to the ballroom
6:45pm promptly the bar closes in the lobby (this will be important later)
7 pm Introductions and beginning of the dinner

So now that you know that the even began at 6 pm here, I'm sure you will find it strange that J and I began getting ready at 2 pm! Yes, we started getting ready super early. We were completely ready by 3:15 pm and just sat (or stood to be more accurate) around waiting for his friend to come over and take pictures at 4! 

We took quite a few pictures before the ball but almost none during, so...here you go...

Last year we just took pictures in the parking lot before going because we didn't have anybody who we planned to take pictures for us. This year we thought ahead. I wanted to go some place scenic to take pictures and then it dawned on me, why go to some park that has no meaning when we have 3 pretty cool retired planes right on base?!

So we took a few normal ones, then we got a little creative just to make some fun memories...

Because you know, who doesn't think it's fun to hang around the front wheels and propellers of a plane?! Then J's friends joined us who were also going to the ball and we got another "serious" picture with them...

Finally we were off to the ball. We got there around 5:50 pm so we were a little early. We walked around and talked to people. I got to meet one of J's Sergeants that he golfs with. He was very nice.

Because we had a friend drive us (and come to pick us up) we got a few glasses of wine. The white zinfandel was the best and J ended up drinking his glass and finishing mine. When we got into the ballroom he asked if I wanted another glass of wine. It was 6:50 pm and the bar had already closed in the lobby. It opened up again at 7:20 in the ballroom but by that time we were too consumed with dinner and talking with our new friends.

I became friends with Kim and Brian at the ball. Kim and I wanted to go dance to the electric slide but J and Brian were being wallflowers. Eventually Kim and I talked them into joining us. J and I actually danced to 3 dances this year. I'm moving up in the world.

J ran into one of his superiors who he really looked up to. We stood there talking with him and his wife for a long time. His wife gave me great advice for being an Air Force wife. I was so glad we ran into them and got to talk. She was the first "seasoned" wife that I had met that actually seemed approachable and easy to talk to. All the other wives seemed bored and didn't want to be there. I hope that I will always enjoy going with J to his formal events no matter how many we attend per year!

We took one final photo while waiting for our ride to arrive. We had an absolutely amazing night. It felt so good to meet J's coworkers and superiors.

Numbers that Fill My Life

As y'all may or may not know, I am a person of science. At least I consider myself a person of science. I am one of those people who calculates. For me everything is about the numbers. My head is always filled with little science experiments about my life. So when Nadine at Back East Blonde posted about how a person could be seen as numbers, I was wondering why I hadn't thought of it before?!

I have been living on this earth for 8476 days.
Approximately 6093 of those days I've been in school.
I have grown to 62 inches tall during my lifetime.
And I  have 2 extra bones in my body.
That is 1 extra bone in each foot.
I have also broken 1 bone.

In my lifetime...

I have taken about 7,394 pictures.
I have kept about 2,496 of those pictures
My favorite picture of myself is my senior picture in my prom dress

I have participated in 4 "physical" activities.
I plan to at least add 2 more sports to that list.
I think I will be good and 0.5 of the new sports I add.

I lived in 1 state, had an extended stay in 1 state and visited 14 states.
I've also been to 1 country other than the USA.
I want to step foot into a total of 48 states and 2 countries (not the US).

I have found the 1 that I will spend my life with.
We have been together for 532 days.
And engaged for 184 of those days.
It will be approximately 638 days until I become his wife.
I tell him I love him approximately 7 times per day.
And I get called "love" about 20 times more often than I tell him I love him.

2 Shetland Sheepdogs make me laugh and get my kisses every day.
I've owned more than I can count but my latest number is 6.
Awkward Fish (A. Fish for short), Vector, Jack the Ripper, Pancake, Klown, and Cell
Jack the Ripper killed and ate 4 of the previously named fish.
1 fish actually died of natural causes.
My desire to own an animal other than a dog or fish: 0
The desire to call animal control on the 14 cats living across the street that climb on my car: 12 times per day.

The number of friends I actually talk to regularly is 3
My 2 dogs are also friends of mine. I talk to them regularly

Currently I have 2 water bottles sitting next to me...

And a calculator in case the numbers get a little hairy
3 pair of sunglasses are sitting on my nightstand
Decorative wine glasses hold 12 corks from 12 bottles of wine (in case you didn't realize every bottle has 1 cork)
Those 12 bottles of wine have been drank over the past year
But I only average 3 glasses of wine a month
I would rather drink about 7, but I don't like to drink alone

6 is the number of workout I do per week
Week 9 of Insanity I will start soon
With an average of 650 calories per workout
This is usually 1 happy lady
1.6 miles per day is what I usually walk my dogs

Studying chapter 3 of Pharmacy Technician book
November 15 is my goal date to be ready for the exam
90% is what I would like to pass with

11 o'clock is my bedtime
And I have 3 minutes until 11.

Ball on a Budget?!

Can you believe Katie and I are almost done with No Spend September?! It's crazy how fast this month has gone by!

This week I officially accepted J's offer to go to the Air Force Ball again this year. I had to work out some kinks in order to plan the trip, but it's official. 

So I know last year I spent $50 on a dress for ball that was simple yet beautiful from a bridal shop which was unfortunately closing. But this year because I'm in the midst of No Spending I decided to reuse a dress. Nothing wrong with that right?! 

I've kept all of my dresses from high school proms and homecomings so I pulled them out and tried them on. In previous years I might not have been able to wear them, but luckily this year I could fit into all of them. I ultimately chose a dress that I wore to homecoming my freshman year that my mom made for me. 

I did want to get a few make-up and facial products though. I've noticed when doing my makeup I feel like sometimes it "sits" on my face. I had been watching beauty videos by Casey Holmes and saw how she loved her Beauty Blender. But I was not willing to spend $20 on one little sponge even if it worked like magic and especially not knowing if I would like it.

I did my due diligence and found a few dupes that cost $5. I watched videos, got reviews and chose one from CVS that sounded pretty good.

It works wonderfully. The original Beauty Blender might work slightly better, but for just trying it out and seeing if I like it, this is all I need. When I first tried it, I used the blender on half of my face and my regular way on the other half and I could visibly see how the regular method left my makeup visible on my skin and it just didn't look good. This was well worth the $5 that I put into it and can't wait to use it for my ball makeup!

You may not be able to really tell, but I think it looked so good in person. I also got a few breakouts and burnt while laying out on the beach so I'm going to pick up a few other facial products before the ball. But I'm keeping my total amount spent under $20 which I consider pretty good considering the price of make-up in general. Just buying a facial wash is nearly $6 for the kind I like. Geez!

I can't wait for show and tell about ball!

Insanity Week 8 - My Computer Doesn't Like Me!

I have had one heck of a time trying to get this posted! Let me just say my computer didn't like me. So here it is like 13 hours later than usual....

This week has been one heck of a roller coaster ride as far as my attitude and working out goes. I felt like I wasn't getting any better during this second month. I felt like I was looking bigger not smaller, it was just all around not good.

I finally got through the negative emotions and pushed on. I think I finished up the week pretty strong though. Once again I'm at the beach so I don't have a scales to weigh. I measured but my results didn't change. I'm going to be horrible and pause for a week before my final week of Insanity.

The Air Force Ball is this coming Saturday and so I'm staying in Charleston for about a week. I won't have the room to actually do my workouts. So my plan is to just be active this week like going for jogs or walking around the base and then pick up with my last week next week next week and hopefully get some great results.

This journey is almost coming to an end!

What's Waiting in my Future

This past week I got in my lovely Pharmacy Technicians study guide book. I thought it might be interesting to tell y'all about it. However, I don't really know how to tell you about it without boring you to death, so here's what I know so far...

My book has a pretty cool cover, and when I write notes I sometimes get distracted by my engagement ring. It just looks so pretty. I told J I probably would have studied more in college if I had of had it then. I would have wanted to write so I could watch the way it sparkles when I move my hand. Anyway, more things I learned...

My book tries to be funny. I got a good chuckle out of it. It is not funny when it gives me abbreviations and medical terms that I should learn/know when working in the pharmacy that equate to me writing out 199 note cards! Luckily I have approximately 150 of them learned already!

I have had my book for 1 week tomorrow and I'm still in chapter 3 because of all those darn note cards! Slowly but surely I will get there...

I think J might also be interested in becoming a pham tech too... we are just a bunch of science nerds over here!

Money May Be in my Future?!

It is Wednesday again, meaning time to check in with....

Katie and I are all about saving (and making?!) some money this month! 

I have done pretty well this week. I didn't spend any money. J had me very tempted when he said he went to Jack's (a fast food place in Alabama) and got breakfast. It was so tempting to run into Bojangles and get a sausage biscuit, but I resisted. I came home and cooked some turkey bacon and an omelet. Possibly slightly healthier too.

This week I got in my Pharmacy Technician study book to take the PTCB (Pharmacy Tech license test). When I pass it (no negative thoughts), I should be able to get a job at the Kroger pharmacy through a family friend! Yay! There might actually be some money in my future!

I was lazy this week and didn't do any sort of looking at good meal tips, I did create a board on pinterest if that counts?! But I read this blog post by Blissful and Domestic about how her family lives on about $14,000
a year. They also paid for their house in cash. Woah! I talked with J and we would like to do that. Our yearly living expenses might be slightly higher because we would have extra bills such as car payments and housing expenses but I definitely think we could live on a $20,000 a year budget. Plus maybe by living within our means we could also pay for a house in cash?! How awesome would that be?

How Do You Text?

Are you the type of person to get a text or an e-mail and read it right away? Do you respond immediately after you read it? Maybe you are busy and read it later then respond? Possibly you read it and don't respond immediately? But if that's the case, when do you respond?

I personally fall into the first category. If I'm not in the middle of something I can't stop {driving}, I will read and respond immediately. It bugs me to no end to have my notification bar full! But I have found I can't read it and respond later because I will ultimately forget to respond to the text message or the e-mail.

If you fall into the latter categories, what is an appropriate time-frame to respond? Obviously when you become free, would be a good answer. But is there a universal unspoken "rule" that dictates a time-frame I'm  unaware of?

I suppose because I'm an immediate responder this rule doesn't apply to me as much. But I think there should be one. After college I don't talk to my friends on a daily basis much anymore, and for the most part I'm okay with that. We all have our own lives and I enjoy catching up when we can. Two of my good friends from high school and college have both started new jobs this year. I texted both of them to see how their first day went. I was very excited for them and wanted to hear about it. One I heard from a week later, the other I still haven't heard from. And I do realize they are busy, I really understand that. There are about a thousand possibilities for not hearing from her. It could be as simple as she read my message and forgot to text me back.

I am probably being very hard on my friends and should just forgive and forget, but when we talk very few times, I like to actually be acknowledged!

Insanity Week Seven

This week has been a little crazy. Our hot water heater went on the fritz last Monday. So because I've been watching my aunt's dogs I would go feed them in the morning, do my workout around 4 pm then go back to her house feed them dinner and take a shower (so I'd have hot water).

Let me just tell y'all, since I've been used to getting up and doing my workout the first thing in the morning, it's hard to find the motivation to do it at 4 pm! I've tried my best but I just felt tired before I even started the workout. I did my best and I feel like I am stronger than last week, but I just don't feel like this was my best week ever. I will just have to try harder the remaining two weeks.

I did get fairly good results this past week though. I'm still hoping that by my final post I will be down 10 inches. By the looks of it, I might get there!

Yay!! Two more weeks!

1. What is the name of your blog?

American Honey. I recently changed it but so far I'm loving this name!

2. What do you love most about blogging?

I love being able to connect with other bloggers. Especially when I have things in common with bloggers. Plus it's kind of nice to get my thoughts out and have friend comment and give me their opinions and support.

3. Why did you start blogging?

I've always had a blog since as long as I can remember. But more specifically I started this blog as a way to connect with other military SOs. I had been with J about 3 months at that point and I was feeling a little sad being in this long distance relationship and wanted to find others in my same situation.

4. What is something you’d want to tell someone just starting out in the blog world?

Honestly, I would want to tell them to blog about what they love and be true to themselves. For a while I got caught up in trying to grow my blog and basically writing about what I thought people wanted to hear and less about just myself, my thoughts and my world. Your blog is really like your virtual home. You have to invite people inside and let them get to know you through this "home"

5. Biggest blogging learning experience you’ve had?

Bloggers are friendly, they will give you help and advice when you need it. I was a little afraid to ask for help while trying to create my blog and remodel it. I finally got it. I'm not sure if that's a huge learning experience, but that's all I've got.

Friday the Thirteenth, My Lucky Day

Whenever Friday the 13th rolls around I can't help of thinking of my grandfather, Pop. My grandfather is one of those old fashion types born and raised in West Virginia. He lived in the mountains until he met and married my grandmother and moved to Virginia.

Pop kind of reminds me of that fisherman on the State Farm commercial that is dangling the dollar in front of the girl... yep, that's how I think of him... When I was little I used to think of Pop and my grandmother, Nanny as Lucy and Ricky and my great aunt and great uncle as Ethel and Fred. I guess I was a big fan of I Love Lucy back then. Who knows.

Pop has certain things he was raised doing. For example he will never tell you goodbye. He will say anything but that. He reserves "goodbye" for right before he goes to Heaven. I'm never quite sure what to say to him when I'm getting off the phone. Usually "have a good night!" then I just hang up. I like to respect his final saying wishes. 

Another thing he used to always tell me was that Friday the 13th wasn't unlucky. Yet, it was one of the most luckiest days you could have. So now whenever I realize that the 13th falls on a Friday I get really happy. I think this is one of those traditions I will try to pass down to my children as a legacy to Pop, my wonderful grandfather.

No-Spend September 2nd Update

Thanks for returning for another update on No-Spend September with Katie and I.

I am happy to report that nothing tempted me this week. I think last week was so tempting because I knew that I had told myself I couldn't spend so it was like rebellion.

I did however go to dinner at Logan's with my mom last night, but I'm not counting that because she got the bill. Maybe that's cheating... don't tell me if it is.

So I've had an interest on ways to save money once J and I start living together. I've come up with a sample weekly menu and some reasons why I put it together like this. Also look for the few recipes I linked in there.

I imagine that we will do our grocery shopping every Sunday so we will probably want a simple meal that doesn't take a lot of time and effort to make. This is something that J loves and I enjoy because we never ate simple easy stuff like this when I was growing up. Plus they have some very tasty sounding meals.

This is another quick and easy meal that J and I both love. Lucky for us, we both enjoy what I consider the simplest salad on earth, the Cesar salad. So grill up some chicken and throw together some lettuce, cheese, croutons and dressing and ta-da! Dinner is ready!

Baked ham is something that I love. You can get it pre-cooked and pre-slices where all you have to do is heat it. This meal will leave us with many left-overs great for lunch and another dinner. 

By having another meal with the main meat being hamburger meat, we can buy a larger quantity and divide it up to eat at multiple times throughout the week rather than going to the grocery store multiple times during the week and being tempted to pick up something that we don't need.

I applied the same theory to my chicken as my hamburger meat. There are plenty of chicken recipes that makes the chicken taste completely different so you don't feel like you are having the same thing over and over again. I haven't actually tried this recipe before, but I love orange chicken from Chinese restaurants, but this could be a good substitute for going out to a restaurant. More hamburger meat being used up with one of J and my favorite sides, bakes beans. I just love apple sauce so I had to throw that in there too!

Here are more left overs from the ham and other side dishes. I tried these bundles when I was in college and thought they were pretty darn good. So an easy meal for a Saturday night in case we have something planned or just want to relax on the couch. Here is the recipe for the ham & cheese bundles.

Oreo-Stuffed Brownies

These Oreo-stuffed brownies were the perfect new desert to take to last years family Brunswick stew. I made them again for our family reunion this past weekend. They were a hit! I think because from the outside they just look like a brownie it is quite a surprise when you bite in and find an Oreo, but the taste is amazing. Plus they are very simple to make.

Oreo-Stuffed Brownies

1 box of brownie mix
1 package of Oreos
ingredients for brownie mix (vegetable oil, eggs, water)

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix up the brownie mix according to the box. Grease muffin tins (or use muffin cups). Drop Oreos in the brownie mix and place one Oreo per cup. (I used 24 Oreos and then evenly divided the remaining batter to pour over top of the brownie battered Oreos)

Bake brownies for 10 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Let brownies cool and enjoy.

These brownies are amazing to eat while still warm. I've used regular Oreos as well as the "Blondie" or what I call "ut-oh" Oreo with a white cookie and chocolate filling. This past weekend I used the ut-oh Oreos and they turned out pretty well but previously I used regular double-stuffed Oreos and they were good as well.

Insanity Week 6 -- The TOUGH week

The first day of this week nearly kicked my butt too much. Sunday's workout involved the fit test as well as an hour Max workout. Monday I woke up and I was sore and I just didn't want to do it. But J helped me through my stubborn-ness and I pushed on. I'm sure glad I did though. I also accidentally mixed up the workout videos and did the wrong workout on Thursday. Oh well, at least I did something right?!

I really felt skinny this past week. I kept taking pictures to send to J to show him how I felt so skinny. I'm so silly, I know. You don't have to tell me. I really feel like I'm getting stronger. Especially in my abs. I feel like they are hiding under this very stubborn layer of fat. It will come off, I just know it! But I want to share one of my "skinny" pictures with y'all because I'm so proud of myself!

This week's results have been pretty good. I really am impressed with myself. This week my body fat has come down to 27.10% (about a 3.2% decrease). I am really hoping that next week will be awesome too!

Yay for awesome results, feel better and very very supportive fiances that listen to all my blabbering on about how skinny I feel all while keeping me motivated. He deserves a trophy.
