All Hallows' Eve

Thursday, October 31, 2013

In my dreams last night, I got a call from my Grandma Ruby. Sounds normal right?! There's only one thing wrong with that. She's been dead for about 10 years! It was a pretty weird dream.

I like Halloween, but I also believe in more than just going around and trick-or-treating. I've heard that today, Halloween, is the time when those who have passed before us are closest to us here on earth. Maybe that's true? Maybe not. But after that dream I'm beginning to wonder.

Whether you believe in ghosts, want to remember those who have passed before us, or just are in it for the candy, I hope y'all have a happy Halloween!

The House on Tradd Street

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

I am one of those weird people who likes to coordinate things. I like to have fall candles, fall nail polishes, warm cozy fall drinks and fall books to read. So I turned to Pinterest to find a good fall books to carry with me to the beach. I happened on one of Karen White's books about ghosts. I thought how perfect it would be because Halloween was coming up soon. Little did I know that it was a book about ghosts in Charleston and when I found that out I fell in love.

Let me just say, even though I say I fell in love with this book because it has ghosts and Charleston I gave it a fair chance to be horrible. But it definitely was not horrible in any way. I finished this book over the trip and before I was even half way done with it I had gone to my favorite used book store and bought the second one in the series.

Melanie is the main character who can happen to see ghosts. She inherits a house from Nevin Vanderhorst who makes her promise to find out why his mother left him when he was 8 years old. As the story goes on she becomes friend with the handsome blue eyed writer, Jack Trenholm, and together they discover what happened to Mr. Vanderhorst's mother and restore the house on Tradd Street.

I saw recently that Katie also finds good books on Pinterest. Does anybody else do that? How do you find out about hidden gems that might not be easily found?

Wine Tasting + Holiday Wines = Happy Ashley

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Y'all know me and my love of wine. While my family and I were down at the beach for the annual (somewhat painful... but that's another story) Homeowners Association meeting this past weekend we took a de-stressing trip to Carolina Vineyards, a local winery, to check out their holiday wines and a few new ones.

Source
We got there kinda late which it was like 8 pm, but when we were about the only people walking around the outdoor mall, it seems kinda weird. We were the only ones in the store while we were doing our sampling and so the guy was joking around with us and telling us stories from his past. He could have easily been a comedian.
Source
Anyway the vineyard has a pretty good selection of wines. One thing I love is that they have their wines with different sweetness. I tend to stick more towards the sweet wines, but I think it's kind of cool that if you really wanted Elderberry wine (my favorite) but you didn't like sweet wines, you could get it dry.

So when you go in they have this whole wall with all their wines and you grab a wine list for your tasting. It's 7 tastings for $3. Our 7 tastings turned into more like 10 because our server (if that's what you call him) really loved the Pecan Pie wine so we had about 4 tastings of that and he was drinking it with us.

We went in to taste all of the holiday wines. Unfortunately they were out of the Gingerbread House, but we did get to taste the other four holiday wines: Santa's Reward, Wanda's Fruitcake, Sugar Plum Fairy and Pecan Pie. I also tried three new regular wines as well. They were all blended fruits which seem to be really good.

As we went through I wrote down on a scale of 1 to 10 how I liked the wines. I really liked all the wines I tried since nothing got below an 8. They were just so fruity and delicious. I really need to work on my descriptions. Maybe there is some kind of tutorial on wine tasting where I can learn how to express what I'm tasting.

Anyway out of all the delectable wines, we eventually settled on purchasing two of the ones we tried. Tropical Escape and Sugar Plum Fairy. I really liked Santa's Reward. It was a warm spiced cranberry wine. Warm spiced wines in the winter are so good!

Source

While we were taking out last taste of the Pecan Pie wine, our server told us how we was creating a Pinterest page for the vineyard and wanted us to be one of his "pins". Anyway, now my family and I are semi-famous because we are on the Carolina Vineyards Pinterest page!

I'm Not Hatin' on Pinterest, I Just Wish I was That Fashionable

Thursday, October 24, 2013

I feel like Pinterest has ruined society. There are so many cute DIY decorations, recipes for delicious looking food and fashion styles that make me feel like I have to create some kind of DIY every day, make a 5 star meal every night and look like a super model while doing it all!

Now, with that being said, those of us who don't do the above mentioned things every single day like to get some inspiration. Spending most of my junior and senior year in the lab in college ruined my sense of style. Freshman and sophomore years I used to dress up basically any time I left my room. After that I spent so much time in the labs that I had to wear jeans and closed toed shoes. Plus when you stand for about 3 hours, you want your shoes to be comfortable. So my everyday look was basically jeans, a t-shirt or sweater and tennis shoes.

After getting out of college I don't have much to dress up for, but I always leave the house looking nice even if I haven't picked out a Pinterest worthy outfit. But I get ashamed. I have a hard time looking in my closet and just putting together a cute stylish outfit. I have been going to Pinterest for ideas especially for fall fashions. Here are some of my favorites that I have tried or would like to try to mimic.

Source

I have a pair of grey faux leather boots that I rediscovered in my closet. I decided to hop onto Pinterest to get a little grey inspiration and this is what I found. I actually did a pretty good job of copying this with a grey shirt, jeans and my boots. But I wore a black scarf instead.

Source

I haven't tried this style yet, but I'm sure I could pull off the top with the scarf. I just don't own flats...

Source

It's just so simple and cute. Why couldn't I think to dress like this without having to see it on the internet first?!

Am I the only person who has this trouble thinking up cute fall fashions without exploring Pinterest first?! And remember now, I'm not hatin' on Pinterest! I actually love to spend quite a few hours there, I just wish I could come these cute outfits on my own!

Netflix has Helped Me Get Out From Under the Rock

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

I have fallen in love with Netflix! Like seriously it is one of the best things. The only downfall is that I can go through a TV series in like 20 seconds flat. Okay, so 20 seconds is more like 2 to 3 weeks in real time depending on how many seasons there are but no joke. I watch TV shows on Netflix like a kid eating his Halloween candy!

Source

I've been one of those people who lives under a rock when it comes to most shows and movies. I didn't start watching Dawson's Creek until my freshman year of college. That's 2008 people, which means quite a few years after it's final episode! Luckily I wasn't too late on the uptake for One Tree Hill. My roommate senior year got me hooked on that in 2012 so I wasn't too terribly far behind... for my standards.

I'm not prejudice to teenage dramas, I enjoy my sci-fi adventures too. To be honest, I don't even remember how I happened upon this show. I think it showed up in my suggestions list but I fell in love. I didn't realize I was such a sci-fi nerd until I watched this show. Fringe got me hooked. I expected it to be more of a science-y Supernatural, but it exceeded all of my expectations! Walter was just so fun!

Source

I loved it so much I craved another sci-fi show that was good (I didn't think I could find anything better than Fringe). I searched and searched some more until I found Eureka. It was alright, but I continued to search until I watched Continuum! And now here I am 2 weeks later and I've finished it. I'm telling you, I eat this stuff up!

Source

I'm currently in the middle of season 1 of Revolution, which I believe is just now beginning season 2 on live TV. I like it; it's more bronze than brains and definitely not teenage drama. But I think I want to watch a little bit more of teenage drama.

Do y'all have any suggestions for fun teenage drama?!

Getting old can be a ---

Monday, October 21, 2013

I feel so bad for Christy, my sweet baby girl. She is my doggy; she's about 6 almost 7 now. She has always been so active. She loves to run and play. Especially chasing animals.

We live where there are squirrels, deer and who knows what other kind of "wild" animals. She loves to jump up at the trees to try to get the squirrels and when she sees a deer or bunny rabbit she will jump and leap just like they do. And don't even get me started on cats. I mentioned them in an earlier post; we have about 14 cats across the street that like to roam into our yard. Well she goes bazerk when the cats come even slightly close to our yard.

I think that Christy has sprang (sprung?) her front paws a few times from going after a few ton of animals. So now she doesn't like to get up and move around. If she's sitting down she tries to stay there as long as she possibly can. I don't think all the rainy and dreary weather has helped her feel any better. We are thinking she's just getting arthritis from getting up in age, she's almost 49 in people years!

We are considering taking her to her annual vet appointment early to have her paws check out to make sure it's nothing seriously wrong. I really want her to be okay, I don't want anything to happen to her. When I move down to South Carolina, she's coming with me so she has to be okay.

And just as a demonstration as to how acrobatic Christy is, here she is while riding in the car with Bo...

Take a good look... that's her back foot as she's sitting on Bo. It's okay to laugh... I did.

Sunday Social

1. What do you value most in life?

I might be kind of weird for this, but I value my relationships with people the most.

2. What do you think is the greatest invention in your life and why?

This type of question was posed by my college history professor and my answer at the time was the airplane because humans learned to defy gravity. It's a little ironic I ended up with a guy in the Air Force.

Today, in my life I would have to say picture messaging or Skype. Things that helps bridge the gap when I can't be with John.

3. What do you think is the secret to a good life?

Happiness. Forget the things that make you upset and just be happy. I'm better at saying it than actually implementing it sometimes though.

4. What would you most like to be remembered for when you’re gone?

I would really love it if people could remember me by some scientific invention or cure for a disease, something to help people. But in reality if I can impact just one person and make them better, I would be happy.

5. What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?

This is one of the questions I was asked in my job interview a little while ago, for the interview I said getting 2 bachelor's degrees in 4 years. It kind of sounds like I'm bragging, but that wasn't and isn't my intention. I just feel like that is quite an accomplishment that many people don't have the opportunity or desire to try to obtain.

I guess a non-education related accomplishment I'm proud of is that I've managed to always be me and true to myself. I've had times where people tried to persuade me be something I was not comfortable with, but I stuck to being me.

Sunshine Award

Saturday, October 19, 2013

I have been loving reading Chelsea's blog Anchors Aweigh! She is so sweet! Yesterday she was nominated with the Sunshine Award and she nominated me as well. She has given me 11 lovely questions to answer.

1. If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would it be and why?

I would have to say John. I realize that he mostly tells me about his day and everything but we often get into discussions about how tiring his day is and why he wants to come home eat dinner and go to bed at 8:30. Boo! I think he sometimes likes to be a drama queen.

2. What is your all-time favorite TV show? *Bonus points if you say Friends ;)

NCIS has been my long running favorite TV show, but I've come across so many others that I also enjoy.

3. What is one talent you are thankful for?

This is kind of difficult, but I think dance would be one. So many times during high school I was frustrated and I would just dance it out.

4. We all know I am obsessed with babies. What are your favorite baby names?

John and I often talk about this and I thought we had agreed on Tanya Alexis, but he later reneged on Tanya. Apparently he doesn't like the name. But he definitely wants Alexis for his cousin who was killed in a car crash before she could even turn 2 years old.

5. What is your favorite holiday of the year?

St. Patrick's day! What can I say, I'm half Irish! But on a serious note, one of my favorites is Thanksgiving. Every year it gets even less credit than it deserves. But I think we should all be thankful for what we have.

6. What advice would you give the 12 year old version of yourself? For example, I would tell myself to put down the clunky doc martins and wear a shoe actually made for a girl, but I digress.

My advice would be to not get too wrapped up in the friends you have now, if they aren't nice to you it doesn't matter. You will make new ones soon.

7. Name three things you can't live without.

God, my family and my doggies

8. If you could relive any moment of your life, what would it be and why?

I don't really think I have a moment I would want to relive. None that I can think of now at least. I just try to enjoy everything as much as I can in the present (I think I've been watching a little too much Continuum and futuristic shows)

9. If you only had $20 to spend at Target, to which section would you go?

Probably the stationary or cosmetics. Those are the two things I've been really into lately.

10. What is one thing most people do not know about you?

I suffered from depression for about a year. Some people know, but most don't.

11. What is one fashion trend you wish would come back in style. For example, overalls. Those babies were so comfortable!

Oh, overalls were comfortable! I still have a pair in my closet. I guess that would be my answer.

I think I was supposed to nominate 11 blogs and write out some questions, but I don't want to just choose 11 blogs. I love all my readers and the blogs that I read so just know y'all are great!

Five on Friday

Friday, October 18, 2013

Why not share a few things I've been loving this week! Glad to finally try out this link up!

-ONE-

I love getting letters from my college friends. I might have said this before but this is basically our sole way of communication. We decided on this before we graduated. I absolutely love sitting down and writing her about how things are, and it brightens my day to get a letter from her!

-TWO-

I went to Sephora and got a few samples and some tips about my makeup. I have been loving how it's been turning out even with the spot on my nose. I have been feeling so pretty lately!

-THREE-

Bath and Body Works candles have been making me extremely happy lately. If you've smelled any of the fall scents I'm sure you understand.

-FOUR-

I sent some clothes back down with John and that little booger has taken over my sweatshirt and claimed it as his. If you look closely, you'll see he's wearing Longwood sweatpants that used to be mine as well. It makes me feel good to know that he is so supportive of me and likes wearing my alma mater gear.

-FIVE-

Sam's Club was having a tasting of these Kind Plus bars. They were very yummy, plus gluten free so we picked up a box. I really like these and at a little over $1 per bar they aren't that expensive. The slogan for Kind is "all natural ingredients you can see & pronounce" which is pretty much true. I might have a new favorite snack!

Happy Friday y'all! I hope everybody has a great weekend.

I can actually be interesting sometimes.

Thursday, October 17, 2013

I'm not sure what it is but this month I've had a major case of bloggers block, you know, like writers blog but for my blog. September I was on a roll. I had so many things I wanted to talk about. I guess it helped that 2 days out of every week I had topics pre-planned. But still that means I should have had a build-up of extra ideas right?! Wrong.

When I was in high school and college I had a few blogs on Xanga and then Tumblr. I never had a shortage of topics then,  but I also think I was more of a free writer then. I wrote about my day, funny stories about my boyfriends, friends, and shared all of my problems. It was basically my virtual diary. I wanted people to read my blogs back then, but I guess at the same time I didn't care. I care a little more now.

Taking a study break to blog in college

Back to the topic at hand. I've been having writers block this month. Hence the lack of post the first week of the month. Today I went with my grandmother to get her hair cut and the local Great Clips and as I was there trying to start reading my dictionary aka Under the Dome by Stephan King, I couldn't help but listen in to one of the stylists conversation to her client. She happened to be talking about solitaire on the computer and then spider solitaire and how it was harder and easier than the original.

I sat there listening to her ramble on and on about such a silly topic. Then I realized that topics for blogging are all around us. As I sat there listening to her, I decided I should share with y'all my bloggers block. Maybe, just maybe, somebody else is suffering from it.

We blog to connect with people like us and share our own thoughts and opinions. But why not share about our daily lives too?! We are real people after all. I don't know about you, but I live in the real world. And let's get real, my night stand looks a complete mess 99% of the time. I have jewelry thrown all over my dresser (totally not in my jewelry box) and clean clothes stacked in the chair in my room waiting to be put away. Let's not even talk about the shoes all over my closet floor! I realize my life is boring 75% of the time, but the other 25% is blog worthy, so why not write about it?

I'm not saying I'm guaranteeing you will hear more about my life, but just maybe if I find myself with another bloggers block I will take a closer look at my life. I can actually be interesting sometimes.

Insanity and Active Series

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

I am finished with Insanity! It feels so weird to say that. It actually took 2 weeks longer than planned because of my little South Carolina vacation, but I didn't mind. I feel like my pause in the workout gave me a renewed sense of motivation and encouragement to finish out strong and then start another Beach Body video series.

Yes, I am starting another workout program, not quite as intense, but I want to keep moving. I don't want to lose what I have built. Jen from The Adventures of Our Army Life recently completed a half marathon across a mountain! Like seriously up the mountain and down the other side to the finish line. She is such an inspiration, I want to sign up for a run now. I looked at the Color Run in Charleston next May, maybe I can talk John into it?! And I'm so lucky that I just happened to get the Dr. Scholl's Active Series Replacement Insoles from Influenster.

I had been wanting to do a vlog for the longest time. I've always had this desire to do it even before starting my blog here, but John wasn't too keen on the idea of me talking about myself on there I guess safety reasons, but I figured telling y'all about these insoles would be the perfect first vlog. If it goes well I might do more, if not... at least I tried. So take a look, please don't judge my kinda bad video skills and let me know if you like it!

So now on to my wrap up of Insanity. I really think I did a great job throughout this journey. I have honestly done so much better than I expected. I was completely blown away by how much I was able to push myself. I truly believe that because of y'all and your amazing support I was tried to push myself more than if I had only had John's support.

I did the before and after photos. I think you can tell slight differences, but even if the photo's aren't that good at telling the changes in my body I'm still happy.

As for the numerical results, I wish my weight would have gone down a little bit more. But if there is anything I've learned from this journey it's that the scales lie to me!

Again thanks for your continued support! I really appreciate y'all.

I Never Found Anything that Makes Me Feel Like I Do About You

Monday, October 14, 2013

548 days. 18 months. A year and a half. That is how long John and I have been together today.

John has been getting his girly side on and watching One Tree Hill (shh don't tell anybody....) so he will ask me random questions like "when did you first know you loved me" or "do you remember when..."

I love reminiscing back to sweet memories with him. Laying in a field looking at the stars, singing Chris Young to me, getting lost on the way to South Carolina... I figured y'all might like to learn more about the "us" rather than just me with some random pictures thrown in there.

Background:

John and I have actually known each other since early January 2012. We talked fairly regularly and I started falling for him, crushing, you get the point. He had planned to come up and visit on two different occasions and both times he couldn't make it for fairly valid reasons. However, about a year before this I had gotten my heart broken by the man I thought I was going to spend my life with. So after being "stood up" twice, I gave up. I stopped talking to John but he was very persistent. He kept talking to me and eventually I gave in and let him come up to visit.

First Weekend Together

When John fell in love with me:

After a very long 6 hour drive, John finally made it to the very small town of Farmville where my college and Walmart are the biggest places in town. Becuase I wasn't very trusting and having been drinking at a party before John getting there (at around 6:30pm --we started partying early that weekend), my friends and I met John at the local Walmart.

According to John, when he first laid eyes on my in that parking lot he fell in love. He can tell me exactly what I was wearing, how my hair was, what jewelry I had on, everything. We went to Ruby Tuesday's and he can even tell me what we ate.

Bowling Date Night

When I fell in love with John part 1:

One lovely Saturday when John was up in Farmville, we went to get some frozen yogurt from Sweet Frog. We had been listening to Scotty McCreery as we were on the 2 mile drive from my apartment to Sweet Frog. I Love You This Big just happened to be the song that was playing as pulled up into the parking lot. Because we both loved the song, we sat in the car to let the song finish before getting out. When the song was over I looked at John expecting him to get ready to get out of the car and he is just holding my hand looking at me and says "I love you" then gets this look of complete terror. {Let me clarify, I had just finished telling him earlier in the day that  I knew we were both starting to get very strong feelings for each other but I wasn't going to say the L word until I was really very sure I felt it. That I didn't want to move too fast, that's how I had gotten my heart broken before.} He starts saying he's so sorry, he knew I didn't want to hear that and he had been feeling it for so long he had wanted to say it. I just smiled at him and told him it was okay as I thought to myself, I really love him too.

Early Morning Sunrise Picture

When I fell in love with John part 2:

John had told me he was sending me a package one Monday morning and that it should get there by Friday. I anxiously awaited his package asking him all kinds of hints. He said I could hug it, I could sleep with it just all kinds of random things and I thought he was sending me a teddy bear.

Anyway Friday rolls around and that afternoon he tells me that my package should be there, he got an e-mail saying it had been delivered. I went to the clubhouse all excited to get my package but there was no package there. Kind of disappointed, I went to the Relay for Life that happened to be going on that weekend. John continued to text me telling me to go check to see if my package had come. I kind of put it off for about an hour. Eventually after having him nag me so much I went to check once again at the clubhouse if I had a package. I brought a friend with me just so I wouldn't feel like such an idiot if was about to ask the same girl if I had a package. So we went in and luckily it was a different girl but she said I hadn't gotten a package. I was a little disappointed again. As we were walking out of the building I started looking towards my car and there was this guy standing by it. At first I was a little unnerved because it was about 9 at night and then I realized this guy was wearing camo and he was John. I ran and jumped into his arms. It was seriously the best feeling ever. I knew right then and there that I loved him for sure.

My First Week in Alabama

John's First Proposal:

We had been looking for rings for a very long time. I knew John was going to get it soon, but I didn't really know when. In July 2012, we were at the beach and it was storming so bad it was causing the ground to shake. John was a sweetheart and ran to get the car and pull it up under the carport so I didn't have to get wet. We were going out to Buffalo Wild Wings to eat. As we were on our way he starts reaching for something in the back seat and tells me to close my eyes and put my hand out, that he had a surprise for me. So I did as told and when I opened my eyes there was my engagement ring in the box in my hand. I was so shocked and stunned I was speachless. He looked at me and said "Ashley, will you marry me?" I just looked at him. I finally said yes and put the ring on.

We sat in the car for the longest time waiting for the rain to die down a little for us to run in the building. I remember just sitting there hold his hand and staring at this beautiful ring on my finger. All throughout dinner I would hold my hand different ways watching the diamonds sparkle in the light. When I saw that box in my hand and heard him say those words my heart filled with so much joy and happiness I knew I had made the right decision and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.

Wine a Little or a Lot, It's Up to You

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Before J met me, he had never drank wine in his life. Beer and mixed drinks yes, but wine.. no! I'm pretty sure the first weekend we met I offered him a glass of Beviamo Moscato D'Asti and was a little leery about drinking it. But now he drinks just as much wine as I do!

One of our favorite things to do is try out new bottle of wine. Our absolute favorites are in the Beviamo brand we get from Sam's Club. But it's not always convenient to run out to Sam's to pick up a bottle of wine, though we have tried just about every wine in the Beviamo brand!
Source

While I was down in South Carolina, we just went out to the shopette/gas station because it was easiest plus the wines are fairly decent priced with no tax. We actually found some pretty decent wines doing that. We always compare wines when we open them and so here is our list of wines that we had from bad to good. **As a side note we both enjoy white wines and are not huge fans of red wines but we did try some**

6. Red Velvet by Cupcake Vineyards

Source

We wanted this bottle of wine to be really good because we wanted to find an easily accessible bottle of red wine that we liked. This one really was not it. It would have been really good with some dark chocolate but the taste of the wine alone was a little too dry and "alcohol-ey" tasting for me. I do have to say that it was a little better on the second day than when we first opened it.

5. Moscato by Yellowtail

Source
This wine had a nice flavor and was best when very cold. It has a fruity flavor but was a little more dry than I like my moscato. This would not be my first pick if I were going to purchase a bottle of moscato, but this definitely wouldn't be a glass of wine I turned down!

4. Moscato by The Naked Grape

Source
Alright, seriously who smiled when they read the name of this brand? I did. It was a good moscato with hints of orange in it. I liked it and would take this to cook outs or friends houses.

3. Sweet Red by Tisdale

Source

To be honest I chose this wine because I liked the label, it was around $5 and the description said it had a velvety soft finish. It actually turned out to be pretty good especially for the price. This was a pretty sweet red that wasn't too dry. I would pick up another bottle if we were having some spicy Chinese take out!

2. Moscato D'Asti by Cupcake Vineyards
Source
To be honest this one could and probably did tie with the number 1 wine. The flavor in this wine was wonderful. It was very smooth and just heaven in a glass. It was a little more expensive than the other wines, but I would say well worth the extra few dollars!

1. Moscato D'Asti by Il Conte D'Alba

Source

Like the Cupcake Moscato D'Asti this was also heaven in a glass. It was smooth with wonderful light fruity flavor. It was about the same price as the Cupcake but again, well worth the money spent!

I know I'm probably like the worst describer of wine flavor ever, but I just wanted to share J and my pass-time with you and what we found to be our favorite wines to be!
