13 Memories for 2013

Tuesday, December 31, 2013

I'm one of those people who likes to look back at the memories from over time. Each year on New Year's Eve I try to think back over the past year and figure out how I can make the next year even better. Although I didn't have THE Best year, I did have a pretty good one. I wanted to share 13 of the better moments of this year!

13. Fishing with John's brother and cousin - May 12. I don't know what it was about being out at the lake at sunset but it was beautiful and peaceful and just a very memorable moment in 2013.

12. Learning how to make stained glass - February 28. My great friend Lisa taught me how to make stained glass this year. So far I've completed two stained glass pieces and have to solder the third piece together.

11. Seeing Mama S get her GED diploma - June 13. I was so proud of her for completing her GED and actually going to the graduation.

10. Night out with AXE brothers - December 21. I know I just talked about this last week but I enjoy being around them so much.

9. Reaching my 100th and 200th post - February 27 and  I feel like my blog grew a lot between the beginning and my 100th post. I know I didn't really blog continuously throughout the year but somehow I made it to my 200th post!  I'm so thankful for all my readers who follow me on my journey and give me encouragement.

8. Seeing Brantley Gilbert and Kip Moore in concert - April 19. I had such a blast at this concert. It was just what I needed at the time.

Kip Moore

7. Being a bridesmaid to Becca - November 16. Although Becca's wedding isn't until 2014, I got to take part as a bridesmaid and go with her to pick up her dress. I love being her best friend and loved getting to spend this special day with her.

6. Job interviews - several. Even though I went on these interviews and didn't get accepted in the position, I'm glad that I got the experience of being in an interview. I'm sure the right job will come along.

5. Finding the perfect wedding venue - June 9. There was just something magical about having found the perfect place for our wedding.

4. Finishing Insanity - October 5. It felt so good to get active and healthy again.

3. Thanksgiving weekend - November 28. Being able to spend this time with John was one of the better weekend of the whole year. It felt so right to be with him on the Thanksgiving.

2. Air Force Ball - September 28. It felt so good to get all dressed up and attend the ball this year.

1. The Proposal - March 26. I don't think there is much more I can say about this except it was one of the happiest and most emotional times of my life. All the details are here and here!

I hope 2014 will be even better than 2013 has been!

Busy, Busy New Year

Monday, December 30, 2013

I honestly can't believe that 2014 is just a day away! How incredible is that? I honestly don't know where the second half of the year has gone! I feel like as I get older time just seems to fly by. I still need to make up my New Years Resolutions. I feel like there is a ton of stuff to do before the New Year gets here.

I'm pretty excited though because I'm going down to Alabama today with John. We are spending New Year's down there with his family and our friend, Jake. I don't know if we actually have plans for New Year's Eve but I'm sure we will figure something out.

I'm really excited that John and I are actually spending New Years day together. John said whatever you are doing at New Year's is what  you'll be doing the whole year. So let's hope that is true.

I feel like January is going to be super busy! I won't get back from my mini vacation until the 4th of January. I want to take the PTCB pharmacy tech test in January. Also John is having eye surgery the later part of January. I really want to go down to Mississippi with him for that but I don't know if I will be able to. Plus I have to find time between all of that to write here on this little blog. It's just a busy time of the year!

Do things tend to get busy for y'all around now?!
Do you have any fun plans for New Year's Eve?

Time With Friends

Friday, December 27, 2013

The Holidays are such a fun time to get together with friends and family that you might not always have time to see. I certainly have been spending a lot of hours with friends this past week and wanted to give y'all a sneak peak into how my past week went.

[Saturday - morning] I made a very close friend, Anna, in my French class while I was in college. She was a commuter and lived over an hour away from the school. When she needed to stay late at school I would let her crash in my room or whatever she needed. Once she graduated we still kept in touch and we actually went Christmas shopping together. It is so much fun being with her; we laughed at everything. I actually got John's gifts while we were shopping. I'm very proud at my deals!

[Saturday - evening] I got together with my close AXE (chemistry fraternity) friends at Plaza Azteca. Where there are close friends and tequila there is sure to be a good time. I swear I laughed and smiled so much my mouth and cheeks hurt. We are so nerdy though. Most of our conversations were about books and TV shows we've been watching. My best friend and I have always enjoyed reading books together so we are going to have our own little book club. I'm so excited.

[Sunday]  I had such a great time with Anna on Saturday I decided to go see her kids in "How the Grinch Found Christmas" play at her church. It was so much fun. Her kids are so adorable and funny. I mean who couldn't love them?! They are the two on the left side of the Grinch.

[Monday] I got to hang out with my friend Greg like I mentioned earlier. It was a lot of fun getting to catch up with him. I can't believe how tall he is. I didn't remember him being that tall in high school. I had such a good time catching up with him and just getting to talk.

[Today] I'm meeting up with a long time friend to do some stained glass. I'm pretty excited to see her again. I haven't seen her since her birthday in August. It will be so nice to catch up and have a few laughs all while making something very pretty!

Also a little advice, if ever you find yourself juicing, don't put a grapefruit and orange in the same juice. It is very citrus-ey! That was my learning experience for the day.

Have a great weekend!

I Guess I'm a Little Old For Santa!

Thursday, December 26, 2013

Can I tell y'all a secret? I never really got into the Christmas spirit this year. I tried really hard. I helped decorate, I went out Christmas shopping, I wrapped all my gifts, I watched Christmas movies... it was like nothing I did helped me to get into the spirit of Christmas. But even though I didn't feel all spirited, I did have a wonderful Christmas with my family.

I loved getting to see everybody at my grandmother's house Christmas Eve. It was a lot of fun to just spend time with my family. I really tried to take the time to sit down and appreciate my grandparents this year. I know they won't be around for many more Christmases. While I was up there helping to decorate their tree earlier in the month, I showed Nanny the "Merry Mail" sign to hang her Christmas cards. She loved it so I made her one. Unfortunately I didn't get it made and to her until Christmas Eve, but I'm excited she will be able to use it next year.

Also I just have to point out that Christmas Eve didn't go quite as expected. Do you remember how some of my family members got their panties in a wad? Yes, well after making such a stink that the kids needed to get Christmas gifts, and deciding that each parent would bring their own kids gift for under the tree... none of the parents making the stink brought their kid a gift. We even did an ornament exchange and those same family members didn't participate. If we had of known they weren't going to participate in anything we would have gone ahead with our original idea and had a lot of fun. I feel like they didn't want to participate in anything because they didn't get their way of everybody buying their kids gifts. Whatever, y'all can be the Grinch if you want. I got a cute ornament and had a great time.

Christmas day was very nice as well. Up until last year Santa still visited me. I know I'm a little old for Santa, but I really liked getting those gifts. It somehow just made Christmas. But this year everything was wrapped under the tree. I got a ton of amazing gifts (including everything on my Christmas list!). I'm pretty excited about everything. I'm sure I'll write posts about stuff that I got... eventually.

I hope y'all had a wonderful Christmas as well! I am pretty excited to get back in the swing of blogging and reading blogs. Hope the rest of y'alls Holidays are exquisite!

Christmas Tag!

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Merry Christmas Eve y'all! I was tagged by Kelly at Big Apple, Little Bites for this Christmas tag. I figured what a better day to do it than the day before Christmas?! So let's get started...

1. What do you love the most about Christmas time?
It would probably be the decorating and gift giving. I love to surprise people with their gifts and I love being surprised.

2. Do you celebrate the holidays in style of is it Bah-Humbug for you?
My family celebrates in style. Everything in the house gets "Christmas-itized" --I'm making it a word.

3. Are you leaving anything out for Santa this year so he remembers to leave you presents?
No, I heard through the grapevine that Santa was trying to watch his weight (at least in my family), so I don't think I'll leave him cookies. Maybe I'll set out some carrots and hummus. :)

4. What is the one gift you are most looking forward to GIVING?
I'm pretty excited about giving all of my gifts this year. I don't think one thing sets out from all of the others.

5. What is your all-time favorite Christmas movie?
It's a tie between Hallmark's The Christmas Card and This Christmas. I love both of them.

6. What is your all-time favorite Christmas song?
Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys most definitely! I fell in love with it after this commercial. I'm a huge Coca-Cola fan.

7. If given the opportunity, would you participate in an "Ugly Christmas Sweater" party and what sweater would you wear?
I would definitely participate in an Ugly Christmas Sweater party.

8. Have you started any Christmas traditions this year that you plan on carrying forward?
We haven't started any new traditions this year, I won't be able to see John this Christmas so I don't want that to be a tradition.

9. It's Christmas morning... what does it look like outside where you live?
This Christmas it will be kinda sunny. Sometimes we have snow but no luck this year.

10. You just found yourself standing under the mistletoe... who comes to give you a kiss first?
I would want it to be John, but he won't be here. Good thing we don't have a mistletoe up in our house! There is actually some growing up in the trees in our neighborhood though!

I hope y'all have a very Merry Christmas.

Talk Hard. Steal The Air.

Monday, December 23, 2013

I have accomplished quite a feat that, to be honest, I hadn't even thought about. Today is the 200th blog post for me here at American Honey. I'm not quite sure how I made it to 200, I feel like I was just celebrating my 100th post!

Instead of going back through all the memories of what has gone on (because I plan on doing that a little closer to the new year), I wanted to share with y'all my history of blogging and why I started blogging 9 years ago.

Back when I was a freshman in high school I had quite a fascination with older movies. You know those ones they have in the $5 bins at Wal-mart?! Well one that I picked up was called Pump Up The Volume.

The basic premise of this movie is that this guy, Mark is really shy in school but at night has a pirate radio where he expresses anything and everything on his mind. He eventually gets caught, but sends the message to "Talk hard. Steal the air!"

Back in high school I was kind of shy. When I watched this movie, it really struck a chord with me. I didn't exactly want to create a pirate radio, but I wanted to have my own outlet where people could read and I could get comments and feedback. So a blog was what I came up with.

Back when I first started it was basically a semi-public diary. I wrote about things that were on my mind, things that bothered me, what I was feeling, just anything really. There were times when I wouldn't write as much, sometimes I would write daily. I continued on with that for about 6 years or so. As I started to lose interest in writing, I switched over from a "diary" to tumblr and was able to just share pictures and things that interested me. I found that very helpful.

Eventually when I met John and the distance started wearing on me. I wanted to start writing again. I felt like I needed to find a community of people who understood me and what I was going through. And so I created this lovely blog.

I have met so many wonderful people within the 200 posts. I hope I can continue to find wonderful bloggers  as I keep going with this passion of mine.

Let's Talk

Friday, December 20, 2013

Sometimes I really just feel like sitting down and having girl time to just... well, talk. This is one of those times so y'all lets talk!

Christmas is officially 4 days and some odd hours away! Eek! I'm not sure I'm ready yet. I feel like the days have flown by. Honestly I don't know where the time has gone. I have gotten most of my presents wrapped. I still have to make 3 presents. I'm cutting it close I know, but hopefully they won't be that difficult.

My best guy friend from high school got into town yesterday! I'm pretty excited. It's been 5 years since we've graduated high school and I'm pretty sure I haven't physically seen him in at least 4 years. He's in the Army and I'm honestly not even sure where he's stationed right now. If you can't tell we've kind of lost touch, but we've planned for a night of pizza and beer while he's home. I'm pretty stoked!

This is the only picture I had of Greg. It was from our junior year when we went to a specialty school every other day together. In case you were wondering what I looked like all those years ago...

Today is my final day on week 3 of the first day to 5k! I'm pretty excited but slightly nervous for moving up to next week. The 3 minute runs on this one have been slightly difficult this week. Next week it bumps up from 3 minutes to 5 minutes. I'm confident I can do it, I just think I will need a nap afterwards!

I think that's about all I have floating around in the front of my brain right now. I'm so glad you stopped by and please come again soon!

Opening Gifts, Eating Breakfast and Watching Christmas Movies: The Boy Behind This Blog!

Thursday, December 19, 2013

I always love giving John a little spotlight in this here blog, so today I'm here to share his answers to Boys Behind the Blog. I've asked him the questions and his answers are in blue with my responses directly under his answers. I also linked back to previous posts in case you want to check out what we are referring to. Thanks to Mal for hosting the link up and giving me another excuse to talk about my wonderful fiance!

Boys Behind The Blog

1. What is your favorite cereal?
I don't really know. I like cereal period.
We usually eat the off brand of Captain Crunch though that may be because that's always what I want...

2. Pancakes or waffles?
Either one, I'm not picky.
He just doesn't want to eat them for supper!

3. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
I didn't have a holiday tradition growing up. I can imagine having one with Ashley where we open gifts of Christmas morning, eat breakfast and cuddle up to watch Christmas movies.
I'm really excited to start having our own way of doing things on Christmas.

4. Finish the sentence: All I want for Christmas is...
All I want for Christmas is... my fiance

5. What was your best moment of 2013?
The absolute best moment was when I proposed to Ashley, second best was the Air Force ball this year.
I have to agree with him there. I would add a third being Thanksgiving weekend!

I also wanted to mention that I'm being featured on Katie's Chalk It Up to Better Luck series today on her blog! Please go check it out. You might get a good laugh or two!

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

I really like Christmas. I guess you could say I love it because I get to spend time with my family, but I do that on pretty much any occasion. So I am saying I really like Christmas time. Why you may ask?! Well, I love the spirit that comes with Christmas. The joyful feeling in the air. The shopping and swapping with Secret Santas!

Katy has hosted #SuperAwesomeSecretSanta the past 2 (maybe more) years and I've joined in the fun. Now I know this isn't a blog swap, rather an IG swap, but I loved my Secret Santa and her gifts so much I had to share it with you!

I saw a lovely picture on the hashtag page by Chrissy. It was the back of an envelope saying to open the gifts first before reading the note. I thought it was really cool and wished I knew what the gifts were. Turns out, those gifts and the note were for me! How lucky am I?! [Really lucky apparently!]

I took this picture - I didn't want to steal pictures!

I opened the box and was met by 3 wrapped packages and a hand full of Lindt Lindor truffles! Let's just take a moment to appreciate the chocolate by itself.... Ahh! Okay on to the really good stuff. Here is all the goodies I received.

After opening all of my packages, I opened the note. Chrissy is absolutely the sweetest Army wife currently in El Paso. She said that she had looked through my instagram feed and saw that I was engaged. She used the questionnaire we answered as well as my likes through my feed to help her pick out my gifts.

She explained that she got the dish to hold my ring while I was showering, cooking, ect. It was the perfect gift I didn't even know I needed! I always take my ring off before getting in the shower. I usually set it in the same place every time but there have been a few times that I have put it in a different spot and then have a miniature freak out when it isn't where I usually put it. Problem solved! Plus it's an adorable problem solver.

In the questionnaire, I said my favorite animal was the hummingbird. I think they are super cute and absolutely amazing. If you ever get the chance to watch them, look at how fast they can flap their wings. It's incredible. Anyway, she said this would be pretty in the lights of the Christmas tree and boy was she right. Although I didn't put it on the Christmas tree per se, it is on beautiful display on my Christmas palm tree.

Lastly is the necklace. She said the necklace symbolizes the joining of something greater - entering into a marriage, a new family, a new way of life and a new sisterhood of the military spouses. Although I love all of the gifts, I believe this one is my favorite. I can't even begin to describe how incredibly meaningful this necklace is to me.

Chrissy's secret Santa gift honestly made my day. I felt like she has known me for many, many years. Her gifts are so meaningful and well thought out. Receiving her gift has made me love and appreciate Christmas even more!

The Christmas Where You Have to Spell Your Name to Prove It's You!

Tuesday, December 17, 2013

This past weekend was the Norton/Strawser family Christmas party. We celebrate Christmas with all of our "super-extended" family with an ornament swap, Santa dropping off a bag of gifts and of course FOOD! It is always quite a hoot and this year was no exception!

Since I don't see many of these family members very often except at the Christmas party and family reunion, I always love to dress my best. I found this cute red lacy dress at Penny's and when I saw it I just knew I had to have it. The fact that it was on sale for $10 just meant that it was meant for me to get that dress. I also had the opportunity to wear my sparkly gold sequin heels which really make me excited!

One of the most fun parts of the party was the ornament exchange. We had 20 people participating and of course there were 4 or 5 ornaments that were fought over.

Those are the ornaments we took to the exchange. I was about to get the little snowman skater guy except Nanny, who had number 20, took him from me! So instead I got the red and green ornament because I liked it best out of the others.

You can see me in the wee back standing beside Nanny and Pop.  Anyway the ornaments we ended up coming home with were all very cute.

Dad and I ended up getting matching ornaments. Before the party, Mom and I had bought Nanny and Pop's ornaments because we found them at an extremely great price. So Dad got the elongated ornament Nanny brought and I chose the round ornament we brought!

Mom chose a gold and silver ornament one of her uncles brought because it went perfectly with her gold tree in the dining room.

After the holiday cheer of stealing some ornaments from everybody, we got together and sang Christmas carols. I was pretty lucky that other people were around snapping pictures because I was completely lacking on the picture taking during the party. Though none of my family that I know of reads, I want to give a shout out to them for taking some pictures.

It is tradition for us to sing Christmas carols and then when we start singing "Here Comes Santa Clause" Santa Clause (or Santa's helper in our case this year) would magically come in the door. This year my dad was Santa's helper. He came in the door asking if anybody had heard that noise. He was outside and saw Santa fly by on his sleigh and drop this big bag full of gifts as a reminder to be nice!

Everybody was in hysterics as my dad gave out the gifts. As the kids names were called and they would eagerly come up to get their gift he would say "You're not Robbie... oh yeah that's you Robbie!" One girl he even asked to "Spell your name to prove it's you!"  Everybody was dying!

I am laughing just thinking back about our party! Does your family have a get together?!

A Slight Blow to My Ego

Monday, December 16, 2013

I never realized finding a job would be so hard. I figured that after graduating from college with my huge piece of paper saying I'm a college graduate and "I"m smart" I would be able to land a job in no time.

Unfortunately, all of the scientific community and their mothers want graduates to have experience. So when the holidays rolled around I thought that maybe getting a seasonal job would be something good to do to pick up a some money and have something to do with my life.

I applied to Macy's. I've never worked retail before, but I thought I could do it without too much difficulty. I got an e-mail back within a few hours saying I got an interview! Wohoo! A step in the right direction. I went for my interview Wednesday evening.

I did my best in the interview and answered all the questions to the best of my ability while trying not to be nervous as crap and be myself because I really wanted this job. I thought the interview went very well. Except that I got an e-mail back Friday evening saying that "they did not have a position that is equivalent to your job expertise".... okay....

I know I shouldn't be too terribly disappointed, I mean I had never worked in retail before, the most I sold was the idea that high school graduates should come to my college and how great my college was. But the idea that I can't even get a job in retail is a slight blow to my ego.

Before I went into the interview I said a little prayer to God. Asked Him to help me though this and allow for me to follow His will. So even though it was a slightly crushing to me to find out that I didn't get this job I had to think maybe something better is waiting in my future.

Proverbs 3:5-6

I have faith that God will lead me to the path meant for me even though I don't understand it right now.
