Operation Winter Hummingbird

Friday, September 26, 2014

Around these parts, we take pride in watching those little tiny birds that drink sugar water. Yes, we are Hummingbird watchers. I get so excited when I see their little tiny wings whizzing around, but my excitement pales in comparison to my moms. She absolutely adores those little guys!

I actually got this picture with my DSLR and a zoom lens

We are pretty excited that they are still around this late in the season. Usually by the middle of September they've migrated further South. Since they are still hanging around, we've left our feeders out so far.

Recently we heard that if you leave your Hummingbird feeders out all winter, you can get a different type of Hummingbird to stay around. There is a kind that are used to colder weather. Apparently they are the brown Hummers.

Now, I know you next question. How do you leave your feeder outside in the cold weather and not have it freeze. Solution: take it in overnight night. Just be sure to have it back outside by dawn the next morning. Those little guys like their food when they get up.

I'll have to check back in with y'all and let you know how Operation Winter Hummingbird goes. Yes, I gave our little experiment a code name. I'm a little crazy, just go with it.

Do you have a favorite animal?
