#NewCardSmell

Wednesday, December 3, 2014

Two months ago today, I had tried and failed to get a credit card with a few different banks. I was so defeated. I honestly didn't know how to build my credit if nobody wanted to take a chance on me.

I had visited SunTrust bank and inquired about their secured credit card, but didn't really want to pay the fee associated with the card. Really, I had given up.

A few weeks ago I decided to visit Credit Karma to see what was going on. Of course, I didn't have any credit so I didn't expect to see much, but it gave me suggestions on how to build up my credit. One of those suggestions was the Capital One Journey card. It's actually considered a student card, but you don't have to be a student to get it.

I went to Capital One's site and filled out all my information, held my breath and hit submit. Fully expecting to get denied once again, I almost fell out in the floor when it came back 3 seconds later saying I'd been approved. Keep in mind my credit limit is scary low, but I was approved for my first credit card!

Besides the low credit limit, it is actually everything I was looking for. I get 1% back on all my purchases, plus an additional 25% on that 1% when I pay my balance on time. It's just perfect!

I patiently waited for my card to get here and luckily it made it in before Black Friday! So me and my new card went out Black Friday shopping.

Going out shopping on Black Friday
Talk about one excited girl. Now I'm going to patiently wait for my credit score to go up!

  1. I didn't have one until a few years ago... and it was hard to build up credit to get one! After this, you'll be able to have one through whatever bank you want :)

  2. Yay! Good for you! I really, really blew my credit when I was 18. I was like a kid in a candy store, and my finances were screwed until I got out of college. But fortunately my husband and I bought a house and I was able to be added as a co-borrower because of my job. After four years of on-time mortgage payments, I was FINALLY able to get another credit card, but it took almost a decade. Now I have stellar credit and it's awesome, but god did I learn a lesson.

Anyway, I know how excited you must be. Congratulations on this win. Be patient and you'll get there.
