Mississippi Trip

Friday, January 31, 2014

There has been so much going on in the past few days. It's hard for me to find the time to sit down at the computer and actually blog when I'm out of my normal settings. Plus the fact that I have been spending time with John has not kept me motivated to take time away from him to blog much.

I've enjoyed spending nearly 15 days with him though it is quickly coming to a close. While we were in Mississippi we didn't get to do a whole lot. Most of our time was spent in our room (though it was lovely) I'm sure y'all don't care to hear how much Netflix I watched while I was down there. In between watching the TV series Firefly and finishing the TV show Alias, I did manage to get out and take a walk around the track on base. It was very nice to get out and move some especially while getting better from the cold I had.

Saturday night we went to the Hard Rock Casino with some of the other people in the Fisher House. It was a lot of fun. John played Blackjack while I spent a mere $3 on the 5 cent slot machines. I actually won about $1 but just spent all of it in the slots. I'm not a huge gambler. Though I did have fun being there and watching John play at the table.

We had to cut our time in Mississippi short by a little bit because of the horrible weather that was about to cripple Alabama and Southern Mississippi. Monday after John has his "5 day post op" appointment, we stopped by the beach so I could "touch" the Gulf of Mexico. Literally all I did was touch my hand in the water. Although it was a relatively warm day considering it was about to start snowing I wasn't about to step in it.

I also got to see the lighthouse which was kind of a disappointment. I expected it to be much bigger. It was small compared to the lighthouses in the Outer Banks. I still got my picture with it because I think lighthouses no matter how big are pretty cool. Especially the fact that the beach and the lighthouse was less than half a mile from the base!

I look forward to getting back into blogging. Hope to catch up with y'all soon.

January Monthly Favorite!

Monday, January 27, 2014

Welcome to the last Monday of the month! It's also my first monthly favorite! I'm super excited to be starting this and I hope y'all enjoy it as much as I do.

I had quite a few things that I was loving this month, but in honor of New Year Resolutions and this month pretty much being all about fitness and well-being I'm going to carry the trend out with my monthly favorite! This month I'm going to tell y'all about my FitBit.

I've already talked about it a few weeks ago, but I've learned more about it and I just love it. Obviously it counts my steps! But it also calculates distance, active minutes and calories burned. Those are all of the obvious features that it has. Though they are absolutely wonderful, it has some not so obvious features which make it that much better. All of the features can be accessed online or on their FitBit app!

The first non-obvious amazing feature lets you track your water intake. Hallelujah! Finally a way I can track how much water I drink and be more motivated to drink water. That is seriously one of my downfalls in health and well-being. I feel like compared to others, I am in a constant state of dehydration, which I'm trying to work on. So thanks FitBit for this amazing little feature.

The other feature is calorie tracker. As I mentioned, the FitBit calculates a general calorie burn which is great, but you can add the foods and drinks you consume to see your intake vs burn. If you are trying to lose weight you can put in how many pounds per week you are trying to lose and it will help guide you with how many calories you should eat and if you stick to their guidelines when you should be at your desired weight.

I really love this little pink bugger, it's become kin to my cell phone and never leaves my side, literally! :)

Dating -- It Can be So Rough!

Friday, January 24, 2014

After you've been in a relationship so long you almost forget how the dating scene is. Before I get too far into this, I want to clarify that John and I are perfectly fine. However! Our friend, Jake, is still in the dating scene.

John and Jake

Talking to him has got me thinking. How do you meet new people? Where do you go to make new friends? And how the heck did I ever find boyfriends? Dating can be so rough sometimes.

Seriously though, how do you meet new people?! The movies and TV shows make it look so simple. You go to your favorite coffee shop and suddenly you meet the girl of your dreams. First of all, who the heck has the money to go to a coffee shop that often and how do you have time to just sit around at there? I mean it's not like you have this intuition that the perfect girl will walk through the door at 8 pm and you have to be here. No, that's not how it works. I feel like Jake would be sitting there for years.

The other way I came up with besides letting fate take a course was through friends. But that can get a little awkward, you know. You set the two people up and then things don't work out. The whole friendship could get ruined between a few of people in the involved party. We've actually seen this happen. Luckily the girl got the boot because it turned out the was a little bat sh** crazy. So meeting people through friends seems like a better choice than sitting around a coffee shop until you're grey.

You join clubs or groups, you put yourself out there and hopefully you meet somebody. I think instead of a coffee shop, we're going to make the pool in the spring and summer our hang out spot. There has to be some cute Charleston girls around the apartment pool, right?!

Only As Needed

Thursday, January 23, 2014

I can take a sign of relief. Those pesky gas price signs won't be blurry at night anymore! My eye doctor appointment went well whatever Friday I went. I was very nice and polite to all of the people I came into contact with while at the office, unlike the last time I went for my visit.

Unfortunately, I was not as lucky to escape the office without having to get my eyes dilated or picking out and ordering glasses. While I waited for my eyes to look like my dogs eyes, I tried on probably about 20 pairs of glasses.

The optician helping me was super funny and very, very helpful. When Maria (the optician) asked if she could pick out some glasses for me to try on and I said yes, she got such a look of joy and said that she had the perfect idea for me. Although I wasn't exactly thrilled to be getting glasses, I was glad that Maria had an idea of what would fit me perfectly.

When I tried on about the 3rd pair they stuck. I tried on several others and kept going back to that third pair. I really thought I wanted black frames but my mom and Maria said the black was a little too bold and harsh for my hair/skin combination. I stuck with the burgundy pair I really liked. But I did find this brighter pair of purple glasses I really liked. They were basically the same style just different colors. Although after a complete unbiased opinion from another one of the ladies in the office I went with the trusty 3rd pair I tried on.
via

I am lucky though. I needed glasses for my nearsightedness. It isn't horrible from what I gathered and only have to wear them as needed. Basically because I was complaining about lights being very fuzzy at night my doctor said I should wear them at night when I'm driving or take them with me to the movies, anything where I might be looking at something in the distance. But that they don't have to be a full time thing. I'm pretty happy about that because I will definitely have to get used to seeing myself in glasses.

This picture is in the sample pair and please don't make fun of how I look. I was feeling a bit rough as my eyes were fully dilated at this point.

What do you think? I was told by a friend that if I looked very normal in glasses. I would have looked right if they hadn't known I only just got them.

Also if you wouldn't mind, please keep John in your thoughts and prayers today as he is having his eye surgery. Thanks y'all!

Happy Wednesday

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Today is going to be a light day as far as blogging goes. John and I are immersed in eye surgery stuff this week. Yesterday John had his pre-surgery testing which went well. Today is the informative meeting about everything that will go on. So hopefully we will have some time this afternoon to explore the area a little bit.

I have been a little under the weather this past weekend and into this week a little. Stupid sore throat and sinuses. But I am feeling a little better. Vitamin C drops have been my second best friend right after John who has taken really good care of me.

When we got into Biloxi on Monday it was so beautiful and I couldn't help but take this picture of the sunset. I don't think I've seen anything this perfect and the picture didn't even really do it justice.

I hope y'all have a wonderful Wednesday!

God Bless Your Driving

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Greetings from Alabama! John and I got down here Saturday evening after a pretty good drive. As I was driving down I-20 in Georgia I began to notice things that kind of stuck with me. I wanted to share them with y'all to see if anybody else noticed these things in other cities.

1. Nobody drives the speed limit. This did include me somewhat. As you go through Atlanta the speed limit reduces to 55 mph but nobody goes by the limit. I do have to admit that I did about 59 but people were passing me left and right.

2. There are no "Reduce Speed Limit" signs. Maybe Virginia is weird, but when the speed reduces ahead, there is some kind of reduced speed limit sign. It helps to know that you will have to slow down especially when driving in an area where you aren't familiar with the speed limits.

3. People look at you crazy for driving the speed limit. Coming out of Atlanta the speed does increase up to 60 or 65 mph. Even as I was driving these limits, people looked at me like I had 5 heads because I wasn't driving 75 or above. You go right ahead and grab that ticket!

4. I don't care if you curse at me, I'm not going any faster. The drivers on Saturday were horrible with riding right up on you and cursing you as they drive by because you aren't going as fast as they want you to. All I have to say is God bless your driving.

5. Minimum Speed Limit. I had noticed when going through Georgia before that they have just as many minimum speed limit signs as they do regular speed limit signs. Maybe this is a good thing but nobody goes the actual speed limit so I don't think you have to worry about the minimum limit!

Monthly Favorites!

Monday, January 20, 2014

I have a slight obsession with watching YouTube beauty videos. Does anybody else like to do that too? Maybe I'm just weird. But one of my favorite videos to watch is the monthly favorites. I feel like if you have used it for a whole month and you want to continue using it, then it has to be pretty good.

Therefore, I'm starting my own version of monthly favorites the last Monday of every month. Although my monthly favorites will not be limited to just beauty products. It's basically going to be something that I've used frequently, watched, listened to, done, so on and so forth that I really enjoyed during the month.

Each month I welcome you to join along with me and either write a post or comment about what your favorite thing is, if you've tried my favorite "thing", suggestions to me or just a thought in general. We'll see how well this goes. I might totally run out of things by March, but let's hope not.

Packing Lightly.. I Have No Clue What that Means

Friday, January 17, 2014

Hello and happy Friday! Whew has it been one heck of a week. I know personally I feel like I've been put through the ringer and hung out to dry. But it's Friday and things are looking up.

Why are things looking up you might ask? Well I get to see my fiance this evening! Yep, that's right. I'm taking the train down to South Carolina today. And let's be real, I'm a little nervous about my solo trip on the train. I hope it's not too sketchy. But really I'm just hoping I can get a little help with my luggage. Because honestly, when it comes to packing lightly, I have no clue what that means.

John and I are going on the grand journey to Keesler AFB, Mississippi. Why do I get the feeling I'm going to a super po-dunk town? I might be wrong, but I just get that feeling. It's right on the beach though. Maybe I can talk John into going down to the beach before his surgery?! Just maybe. I've never seen the any "ocean" other than the Atlantic. I'd be so excited to see the Gulf of Mexico even if it is the middle of winter right now.

So anyway, it is going to be one long trip. Well, just the drive will be the long part I suppose. Within the weekend I will have been approximately 1,325 miles. That's a very long way. But I'm planning to bring lots of entertainment cue all 21 hours of Game of Thrones audio-book plus The Lightening Theif audio-book (for the trip back) as well. I'm going to get my reading on. But right now I'm going to get my groove on. I've always wanted to do this link up so today is the day to #backthatazzup with Whitney from I Wore Yoga Pants. In honor of the small towns I probably will drive through we will listen to some small town fun!

A New Year with My Boy Behind the Blog

Thursday, January 16, 2014

We're back in the new year with another boy behind the blog with John. I really love this link-up with Mal and Stephanie, but I am particularly loving it this month because I've hard the hardest time coming up with topics to write about. It's so weird how one month you are full of things to say and write about (thanks Christmas posts, you left me with little for the new year!). Anyway, this isn't about me, it's about my ever so sweet and handsome John, so take it away honey!

John and I on New Year's Eve

Boys Behind The Blog

1. What was your favorite movie of 2013?
I didn't really have a favorite movie on 2013.
Personally I thought watching the Fast and Furious movie in the drive in was the best but he didn't think so.

2. What is your all time favorite movie quote?
I don't have a favorite movie quote.

3. What is your favorite type of movie? (Action, scary, comedy, etc)
I like a lot of different types of movies. Some of my favorites are Man on Fire, Black Hawk Down, The Lion King, Fox and the Hound, Forrest Gump...

4. What is your New Year's Resolution?
To try to make Staff [Sargent] and hopefully be married soon.

5. Finish the sentence: This year I will....
This year I will spend with my fiance. :)
Aw, I love him so much.

Happy Hump day y'all! If you want to celebrate hump day but don't have a camel, just grab your best furry friend and sit on him. It looks like just as much of a celebration.

Thanks for always being the center of attention Christy! We love you.

Dream Weaver

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

I have to admit something that I've pretty much come to terms with. I have a very over-active mind and imagination. I've always known this but it has become quite apparent over the past few months.
Every night I have the most fascinating dreams. Every. Single. Night.

I can't escape my dreams. I fall asleep and begin dreaming, if I wake up for whatever reason during the night my dream ends, but you better believe that when I fall back asleep a new dream begins. It's so crazy. I didn't think people were supposed to remember their dreams so vividly.

Almost every morning I wake up and tell John about my crazy dreams that I had. The most notable crazy dream I had was slightly influenced by Alias. I was undercover infiltrating this group of "bad guys" and we were around a parade. As we were walking through the street I happened to see this guy and his black German Shepard dog (which I had seen the previous day at the vet's office) and thought it was so funny because the dog was standing up on it's back legs with the front legs hanging over the fence just watching the parade go by. Anyway, the group I was with went back to an apartment place and ordered a pizza and when it came they made the pizza guy take it back because it didn't have a sufficient amount of toppings on it. Then I woke up. Weird dream right?!

Last night I had a dream I was playing this video game based on Game of Thrones. I guess I really enjoy my entertainment so much that it becomes part of my dreams. I have to admit, it might be a pretty cool video game... maybe?! Or maybe I should start watching and reading more pleasant things. I'm not even sure if that would help.

Sore in All the Wrong and Right Places

Monday, January 13, 2014

Did you make any New Year's resolutions this year? I made some, though I didn't really put as much thought into it this year as I did last year. I feel like I always make goals throughout the year so there wasn't much need in trying to come up with this huge comprehensive list right before January 1.

On the way back to South Carolina as I was listening to the radio I heard a little blurb about how health/exercise/losing weight are the top resolutions people make at the New Year. I can see how that can be a big one. It has definitely been on my resolutions lists in the past and although it's there again this year though I'm not being super strict on myself at the beginning because I know it's something that I will continue throughout the year. It won't be just a resolution I talk about and forget. Honestly, I really enjoy working out and trying to be health conscious (in all aspects of my life), so it is enjoyable to me.

Why is exercise and health such a big resolution though? I mean I truly get why people want to be healthy, but I feel like it should be an all year long thing. Maybe I just think of it that way because it is fun to me, plus I tend to look at things more scientifically and think how I don't want any nasty diseases in the long run. Though I suppose it's not too important why it is the top resolution people make, as long as they try to stick with it.

So now that I've gone wayyy off topic, I decided to try to add some extra exercise routines into my week besides just the First Day to 5k I've been doing. I found a few ab workouts I wanted to try. I did one the other day and man has it left me sore in all the wrong and right places.

One that I found was just plain floor exercises and the other used one of those large "yoga" workout balls. Since that large ball was outside and it was raining out, I didn't particularly want to go out to the garage to get it so I tried the floor exercise.

It did do a good job of working my abs, but it also got to my tailbone. I don't know if I did it wrong or what, but I think I might go find that yoga ball for tomorrow. I like sore abs, just not a sore behind!

So for all of y'all who made resolutions to be healthier, workout more often or lose weight, I hope you are maintaining your resolutions and I wish you success in this wonderful new year!

Boo Eye Doctors! Yay Surgery?!

Friday, January 10, 2014

It's Friday! And that means I have an appointment with the eye doctor today. I wanted to go get my eyes checked out so I don't have to worry that they are slowly going bad! But I really don't like going to this doctor. Any other doctor I'm okay with.

I've only been to the optometrist once. Pardon my language, but I was a pure bitch when I went. I didn't go by choice, my parents made me when I graduated from high school. They said I needed to have my eyes checked to make sure I didn't have an eye disease. I think from the bad experience and the fear they are going to say I need glasses makes me very nervous about my appointment today. Hopefully everything comes back okay.

In other eye news, John has an upcoming eye surgery to correct his vision. I don't really know what the surgery is, nor do I really want to know. The thought of anything: a laser or scalpels or whatever, coming close to my eye, even that stupid little puff of air machine at the eye doctors, it all freaks me out.

I'm hoping I will be able to be there with him for the surgery. I'm excited that he will be getting better, but I'm not sure I want him to have it (though there's no going back now, paperwork and leave have already been signed and put through). I know that sounds mean but I worry... a lot. I'm worried that it will make his vision worse. The fact that he told me he would be coming out of the surgery blind didn't help. That made me freak out even more. I still have a little bit of time before his surgery to become okay with it. I just want everything to go okay.

Anyway, I hope everybody else is having a wonderful Friday.

Getting Together

Thursday, January 9, 2014

Getting together with old friends is so much fun. Unfortunately I had lost touch with them but we still manage to talk some. Though since we are all back in the area of our hometown we decided to get together.

It was so much fun just being with them again. We laughed and talked about old secrets. It was such a great time. It's so weird to see how much we've grown since high school.

One of my friends, Emily, she is a Navy wife. They were stationed in Charleston as well. We talked so long about Charleston and jobs and our favorite parts. We both love Charleston. Luckily she thinks they will get stationed down there again. A girl can only hope John and I will be there when they move back down there.

We also got to play with Emily's baby. She was so adorable. Although every time we commented about her eyes or cheeks she would start crying. I'm pretty sure she didn't like us talking about her. Or she was just tired. I mean either way, she was really cute and pretty well behaved.

I hope that I will be able to stay in touch with them more now. It's nice to have a friend to just send a text to and see what's going on.

Everything We Didn't Know We Wanted

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

I have been super excited about moving in to my first apartment with John. We started thinking about if we wanted to rent a house, apartment or even townhouse. Eventually we decided an apartment for our first year would probably be best. And so the hunt began.

After searching through multiple sites and looking at thousands [maybe closer to like] 20 apartments online in the Charleston area we finally decided on seven places we would actually like to go look at. Most of them looked super nice. They all had exactly what we were looking for and were in a nice area. It was so hard to just choose a few to actually go look at. Lucky for us, John's friend Jake is going to be living with us so he helped us choose.

Out of the seven apartments we looked at, they were all very nice. We had some tough decisions but we stuck with our guts and what felt best for us. Now we just have to hope that there will still be an apartment available when it comes time to get ready to move.

So drum roll please....

[Choice #4]

As the last apartment we looked at we were beginning to get a little tired but were still in awe of this wonderful apartment complex. All the apartments were centered around this wonderful pond and featured a screened in porch or sun room. I personally loved the sun room!

Unfortunately this complex didn't have any pictures inside the apartments but that's alright because it was our fourth choice and is slightly unlikely we will actually live here. The reason this one was fourth was because there seemed to be fees everywhere. A fee to rent a washer and dryer, monthly fees to have a pet, ect. It was just a slight downfall for us.

[Choice #3]

This was also quite a marvelous apartment complex. It is a gated community which is perfect. The apartment was lovely inside. The best part was that they have a tanning salon in the clubhouse or whatever it's called. Not that I actually tan in a tanning bed but I thought it was pretty neat!

This is a view from the end of the living room into the dining room and kitchen. I really love that it has a dining area plus a place to eat at the bar. Super cute. Plus there is a porch directly behind the picture. I thought this was very nice.

[Choice #2]

When we arrived at this location we had driven all over creation because instead of mapping out all the apartments we simply went down the list. Coincidentally, we had already passed this apartment to get to choice #3. So we had to drive back. By that time I really had to use the lady's room. I asked the lady at the front desk. She pointed me in the right direction and said that I was on a timer. I kind of laughed and wondered what in the heck she was talking about. As I went into the dark restroom I understood her joke. The lights were on one of those timers where you set it to a specific time and it goes off after that amount of time.

After getting back to the group, the lady was very nice and funny. She had asked John all about us and even gave him a quiz about my dog, Christy upon the question about pets. After talking all about the apartments we went to see one. As soon as we stepped into the apartment we felt at home. The living room was laid out perfectly with the dining room and kitchen and it just felt like home. To be honest I don't know how it was different than any other apartment we saw that day but it really just felt like someplace I would want to live. It might also have something to do with the porch swing!

[Choice #1]

This happened to be the first apartment we actually toured. When we pulled up we noticed it was in a sort of out of the way place. But we noticed the gate around apartment complex which was a huge plus, no unwanted visitors!

This place literally had everything we didn't know we wanted. I just want to share some of the wonderful amenities around the complex before I even get into the apartment itself.

There is a wonderful outdoor kitchen with fireplace and 365 day pool. Not that I'm anxious to be taking a swim in the current weather, I might be willing to lounge out by the pool on warmer days though.

They also have a guest suite that you can rent for any guests who you may not want to stay in your apartment. The guest suite comes fully furnished which we considered amazing. So now on to the actual apartment.

When you first walk into the apartment there is a little hallway off the main foyer area that contains one of my favorite features and I don't mean the laundry room.

Hello blogging command central. But really, I don't know who will claim the desk area, I just thought it was super cool. Okay so moving on... each of the bedrooms can comfortably fit a king size bed which might mean John and I are getting an upgrade!

And the even better part is huge walk in closets enough for all of our clothes!

And of course it has the kitchen, dining and living area but it looks so fabulous! I could have never imagined having such a luxurious place.

I also [purposely] forgot to mention the sun room. I like to keep a few surprises up my sleeve to keep y'all on your toes. I honestly think the sun room may be my favorite place in this whole apartment. The boys can have the desk, my blogging command central will be right by those windows.

I hope you can see why this place is our numero uno choice. It is exquisite! There are no more words that I can say about it. Just fabulous. Period.

Now we just have to get the apartment and start decorating. Piece of cake!

Time To Get My Walk On

Tuesday, January 7, 2014

I never realized how little I walk during the day. I mean I don't go around counting my steps or recording every little move I make, but I did think I move more than I actually do.

I got the Fit Bit for Christmas and have been wearing it ever since. Holy moly is it sometimes hard to get all 10,000 steps in. I'll walk across the house a few times to do something and it's only 300 steps. I guess I always thought I was doing more.

via

Even though I have found it sometimes hard to get my 10,000 steps in, I do like that it is always recording. I don't have to set up my Nike + running do-hickey thing just to take the dogs for a walk. It's nice. Plus it makes me be more active. Instead of just sitting on the couch at night and watching TV, I will get up and walk around during the commercial breaks. I might look a little silly but I figured every little thing helps right?! It's time to get my walk on.

After having spent a week with John pretty much on the road the whole time I understand how bad fast food is for you. I feel so blah. Although since I've been trying to walk more it does seem to help me not feel so bloated and "round" from all that fast food. Although I do have to say the KFC mashed potato bowl and the Panera soup was mighty good this past week.

I can't be slacking on my goals too much. It's only the beginning of January!

Whirlwind of 2014

Monday, January 6, 2014

This has been a whirlwind first few days of 2014! I'm sorry for the lack of reading and commenting, y'all... last week consisted of 28 hours on the road. It was crazy. But that is a good kind of crazy. I want to share some of the highlights with y'all.

We went apartment hunting!!! I'm super excited about that. I'm probably going to do a rundown of our top 4 choices of apartments because I love them so much.

John and I celebrated New Years Eve by hanging out at his uncles house and playing some games. We had a lot of fun unfortunately we didn't actually stay there until the new year, we went back to his house and set off fireworks! BUT I still got my midnight kiss!

I also went hunting for the first time! I found it pretty boring and actually took a nap while we were "hunting" but some of the people we went with actually did kill a deer. So I guess that was pretty exciting. I might try it again but I'm not sure it's for me exactly...

Jake and I dressed up to go hunting for the first time

John and I after coming back from hunting

Friday was kind of a lazy day but we were slightly productive as far as paperwork goes. John had to go over to the Navy base to get some paperwork signed so I suppose it wasn't a complete wasted day. I also found my new favorite salad from Panera, the spinach power salad and my new second favorite soup, creamy tomato, because broccoli and cheddar will always be my favorite!

I'm looking forward to getting back into blogging and everything wonderful about the new year.
