Why I Stopped Listening to T Swift and I'll Start Again

Confession time. In high school, I hated country music. Like with a passion. My friends absolutely loved country music. Anytime I would get in their car and that blasted nasally noise would be on, I would whine and complain until they changed the station. Finally, they turned me on to Taylor Swifts song Our Song.

I fell in love with Taylor Swifts' first album. I listened to it on repeat! Actually, I loved her first three albums. I couldn't get enough. And then things changed when her Red album came out. I had very very mixed reviews and stopped listening to her all together.

In my head Taylor Swift was a country music artist and that's how it was supposed to be. She made me love country music, so she had to keep singing it. I thought that because she had started singing more pop songs she was becoming a cop-out. She was trying to win over the younger generation with their love of pop music and ignoring all of the fans who loved her as a country music artist... basically me!

I had not listened to a single song of hers for nearly 3 years. I didn't buy any of her new albums or songs on iTunes, nothing, nada, zilch. I was mad at her for changing. But then I realized I was wrong.

Everybody changes, and she is certainly no different. I listened to Shake It Off over the weekend to try to make a new running playlist. I realized that I actually liked the song.

So she doesn't sing country music much anymore... If I had accepted T Swift as a musical singer and not a country music singer, I would have realized that her music was pretty cool all along. So now I have a lot of catching up to do!

Have you ever judged a musical artist?
What type of music do you listen to?

  1. Oye. I am not a T swift fan. Never have been. My problem was always that her songs all sounded the same.. but I do like some of her pop songs now that she isn't trying to put pop into my country

  2. One of my guilty pleasures is T Swizzle! I love her. It's kind of absurd. And my husband hates it... I LOVE to rock out to her in the car, but luckily for him, I don't buy any songs/albums, so it's only when she comes on the radio by happenstance. He always tries to change the station quickly, but I just belt it out anyway, so he'll put it back on because her voice is definitely better than mine!

  4. I swear, Taylor Swift can do no wrong! I love pretty much everything she does. My only complaint is that she pulled all her stuff from spotify and I only use spotify to listen to music these days!

  5. It's good to hear you are open to change. Lol :) Honestly, I can't stand Taylor Swift -- maybe because her music is always on and there is no rest. She has tremendous talent but I just can't seem to get into her music. I hope you find a way to like some of her new music.

  6. I wasn't a huge fan of T.Swift until recently. Not such a huge fan of hers that I'll go out and purchase any of her albums, but I do like it when a couple of her songs come on the radio. I find myself turning up the volume and dancing a little. Lol.

  8. That totally sounds like something John and I would do! I can rock out to some T Swift in the car! I used to do it all the time.

  9. I definitely think it's personal preference. There are some artists that I just don't enjoy either!

  11. Thanks! Yeah, I do get tired of songs when they are constantly on. I tend to switch the channel immediately!

  14. I actually love country music far more than pop. And I like Taylor Swift's music (and hair!). I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan or anything, but it's not bad.

  15. I agree with you! Her hair is so pretty. I loved it when it was long and kind of crazy curly/wavy!

  17. I'll listen to anything (okay, maybe not like, hard rock/metal) but I definitely agree -- when an artist drastically changes their sound, it takes an open mind to get on board with it... I loved Taylor Swift's old stuff and I love her new stuff, but I just generally think of it as two different people!
