I Can See You....

It took me a very long time to tell my friends that I had a blog. Like a very long time. I had been posting on the blog for nearly 2 and a half years before I told the first friend. I was afraid of what they would say or how they might react, but my biggest fear was that they would be concerned about my safety.

I will share many things from my private life, but I do not like to breach that safety measure. I don't want anybody to show up at my house with a knife in hand. Creepy!

So one day when I was reading on Nadine's blog (East &), I found out that if you have purchased your own domain, your address may be out there! Let that sink in for a second! Eek!!!

There is a website (WhoIS) where you can go to look at anybodies address. Give it a try... Kinda creepy right?! And as you may or may not have seen anybody can see your or others address unless they have purchased privacy settings. Seriously y'all... I do not want a scary hooded figure showing up at my house intending to hurt me!

So if you have purchased your own domain and have not purchased privacy settings along with it (mine cost about $14 for 2 years), then you should look into it. All I had to do was go into GoDaddy (where I purchased my domain from) and click on privacy protection. I bought it then and there and my name and address was replaced by GoDaddy information on WhoIS.

I want to give a huge shout out to Nadine for sharing this information and helping us bloggers be a little safer on the internet!

  1. Great post! There's a difference between sharing a few personal details and posting your address for the whole world to see. Blogger has recently started facilitating direct domain purchases again, and you can choose the "private registration" option so that it registers under Google's address. I don't think there was an additional cost as I only paid $12 for one year, and when I used your link to search the registration information, it shows a New Zealand address. It doesn't get much more "opposite end of the globe" for me than that! :)

  2. This is a great post! I checked my domain and luckily none of my information was on it. I couldn't remember if I purchased any security settings, because I am a cheapy!

  5. I originally didn't purchase it. I mean my address was listed as my PO box I have for my blog, but still, a creeper could have found my town and that's a little too close for comfort for me! Glad you are protected!!

  6. That is really true! And had I not have found out about this who knows how long my address could have been out there for anybody to find!

  7. I saw this a while back. Then you bringing it up freaked me the heck out!!!! Because we are associated with the military we should be even more cautious! There are groups that are targeting the families of military members... so I do not reveal exact locations or last name!!!! Just checked WhoIs and was relieved to be safe!

  10. That is so true. I didn't even think about that! I'm glad that you were safe and I was relieved to know that I had put in my PO box so even if somebody had figured it out, all they would have known was my town!

  12. Awesome! It's nice when they have protection automatically, or you purchased it from the beginning
